About

Human Work
Deserves to
Be Seen

Calan Hobbs is an Edmonton-based communications, digital media, and public engagement practice focused on helping local businesses, nonprofits, and campaigns tell stories that matter.

Through social media, photography, video, and community engagement strategies, the work centers on meeting people where they are, and telling stories they can see themselves in.

“To help organizations tell compelling stories that reflect their work and the people behind it, connecting with audiences in a way that is clear, human, and meaningful.”

Who You’re Working With

Twenty years of
reading a room

Before this was a communications practice, it was a career in hospitality. Calan spent years as a hotel concierge in Edmonton, including at the Delta Edmonton Centre and with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and earned membership in Les Clefs d’Or, the international society of hotel concierges whose members are recognised by the crossed golden keys on their lapel. Fewer than a hundred concierges in Canada hold them.

It is not an obvious route into communications, but it is a direct one. The job was working out what someone actually needed when what they asked for was something else, then delivering it without fuss. That is most of this job too.

In 2023 Calan stood as the Alberta NDP candidate in Fort McMurray–Lac La Biche, completing the party’s full slate of 87 candidates. Running a campaign in a riding you are not expected to win teaches you how to talk to people who do not already agree with you, on a budget, with a deadline that does not move. That experience now sits behind the campaign and advocacy work.

Today the practice serves constituency offices, nonprofits, and small local businesses across the Edmonton region, alongside video work with a small trusted crew.

Calgary Constituency Office

The challenge
An elected office with real community work happening every week, but posting that was sporadic and reactive. Long gaps, then a burst of announcements. Constituents had no reliable sense of what the office was actually doing.
What we did
Built a monthly content calendar anchored to the office's real activity: casework themes, community events, and plain-language explainers on issues constituents kept raising. Set a posting cadence the office could actually sustain, and handled creation and scheduling end to end.
The result
A consistent, predictable presence in place of stop-start posting. Signed as an ongoing monthly Standard-tier engagement, and still running.

Edmonton Constituency Offices

The challenge
Two Edmonton offices needed to show up credibly online without pulling staff away from constituent casework. The communications work kept losing to the urgent work.
What we did
Took over the content pipeline entirely: planning, writing, graphics, and scheduling on a monthly retainer. Built repeatable content formats so each month starts from a template instead of a blank page, and reported back on what landed.
The result
Staff time returned to casework while the offices maintained a steady public presence. Both engagements have renewed month over month.

Branded Story Film

The challenge
A company doing genuinely skilled, physical work whose marketing looked like everyone else's: generic stock imagery that told a prospective client nothing about the people or the standard of the work.
What we did
Produced a branded short film on site with a full crew, built around the crew doing the work rather than talking about it, plus a set of edited stills for ongoing use across web and social.
The result
A library of owned footage and photography the client now uses across their site, proposals, and social, replacing stock entirely.

What We Believe

Values

These aren't aspirational statements. They're the principles that shape every project, every story, and every conversation.

01

Human Work Comes First

Behind every post, project, or campaign are people doing real work. That work deserves to be seen, respected, and accurately represented.

02

Story Over Hype

The goal isn't to create noise, but to tell stories that are honest, grounded, and meaningful.

03

Local Matters

Strong communities are built locally. The work focuses on helping organizations connect with the people right in front of them.

04

Access and Clarity

Good communication should be easy to understand and accessible to the people it's meant for.

Where We’re Headed

Our Vision

A future where communication doesn’t obscure the work, but reveals it — making the people, effort, and ideas behind organizations impossible to overlook.

Common Questions

Before You
Get In Touch

How much does social media management cost in Edmonton?

Three monthly social media packages start from $500, $1,000 and $1,500 per month in CAD before GST. Those are starting points, not fixed prices. Every engagement is scoped around what your organization actually needs, and you get a written scope and a fixed quote before anything begins. Corporate video, wedding films, and campaign strategy are priced separately.

Do you work with nonprofits and political campaigns?

Yes — nonprofits, advocacy organizations, constituency offices, and community campaigns are a core part of the practice, alongside small local business. If your work depends on people understanding what you actually do, that's the sweet spot.

What areas do you serve?

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, working with organizations across the Edmonton region and throughout Alberta. Strategy and content work can happen remotely anywhere in Canada; in-person photo and video shoots are concentrated in the Edmonton area.

Is there a minimum contract length?

Monthly social packages are set up as a three-month minimum. That isn't a lock-in tactic. Building a content rhythm and seeing whether it's working genuinely takes longer than a few weeks. Project work like video and photography has no ongoing commitment.

What happens on the first call?

Twenty minutes, free, no pitch deck. We cover what your organization is working on, where communication is getting stuck, and whether this is a good fit. If it is, you get a written scope and fixed quote before anything starts. If it isn't, you'll get an honest answer and, where possible, a pointer to someone better suited.

Who actually does the work?

Calan Hobbs directly, for strategy, content, and day-to-day management. Video projects bring in a trusted production collaborator and crew, and you'll know exactly who is on site before the shoot.
